Detailed
Description

The
successful Millennium Edition is now updated. People
and places, which have proved such an asset in the
Dictionary, have the latest dates and populations.
This enables you to have all the facts and figures
at your fingertips, as well as the whole breadth
and depth of the language described and explained.
The Collins English Dictionary covers the
whole range of English: from historical to modern;
from formal to slang; from aeronautics to zoology;
from British English to Australian English. All
this is presented clearly, in explanatory entries
that are easy to find and well laid out. With the
added feature of thumb tabs. In addition there are
notes to help you deal with difficult or disputed
points in written English; pronunciations guides
for spoken English; and etymologies that trace the
roots of modern English.

Review

Of all the English dictionaries out there I believe
the Collins English Dictionary presents the
clearest definitions, especially of the more 'difficult'
concepts like hope, beauty, and art etc. The
Oxford English Dictionary may present the standard
text but I often find this dry and of less worth
in understanding the root or concept of a word as
compared with the Collins English Dictionary.
There may be dictionaries that boast a larger contemporary
scope, but for clarity and simplicity, it is the
Collins English Dictionary that always finds
a treasured place on my desk.
