MODERN PAINTERS is a lavishly illustrated colour
glossy dedicated to publishing great writing about
art that is devoid of artspeak and not necessarily
written by art critics or historians. It is independently
published four times a year and is one of the world's
best-selling art magazines.
Contributors
Modern Painters has won acclaim for the breadth
and quality of its writing. It was one of the first
art magazines to commission articles from writers
outside the art world, recognising that novelists,

Wow. What a great magazine Modern Painters
is. I have to confess that I'd avoided this magazine
for a long while as I'd assumed it was either confined
to contemporary painters, or else one of those self-help
tutorial artist's magazines. Perhaps the magazine
needs a tag line like 'experience art' to encourage
people like me to open the covers, for once the
covers are opened you're hooked with a wealth of
brilliantly written articles covering a broad range
of artforms, in a publication defined by a clear
editorial vision.
Modern Painters sets the balance between
images and text perfectly. Its contributing writers
are often drawn from the world outside of visual
art, and as a result the reader enjoys critiques,
observations, and comment bereft of the elitism
and referential bluster that characterises so much
writing on art.
I've mentioned the broad scope of Modern Painter,
and it is the magazine's in-depth coverage of different
artforms and cultures that sets it apart from the
crowd. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not suggesting
Modern Painter is laden with features about
the art of many cultures. More that it is open to
investigating artforms in its many guises, and presenting
enriching and enlightening comment.
Modern Painters gets a well deserved 5 Star
AbleStable Award for making that rare connection
between the world of art and artists, and that of
the ordinary person.
