Norton SystemWorks 2003 Professional Edition gives
you all the tools from the standard version of SystemWorks
along with Norton Ghost for taking complete system
backups or transferring all your data to a new disk
drive.
The main tools in SystemWorks help you avoid viruses,
keep your PC running smoothly and fix it when it doesn't.
Like a Swiss Army knife, you won't need all of the
tools in it every day but when you do need them you'll
be very glad.
Norton AntiVirus 2003 is the excellent antivirus software
that now scans files downloaded through instant messages
as well as from the Web and POP3 e-mail; it also blocks
e-mail viruses that try to spread through your e-mail,
keeps your virus definitions up to date and looks
for virus-like behaviour.
The tools in Norton Utilities share the same simple
interface, making them both easy to use and powerful;
you can check the registry and your hard drive for
potential problems you wouldn't otherwise see and
get help to fix them. Some older tools have been superseded
by options in Windows XP itself but the Speed Disk
defragmenter gives you more information and more options
than the built-in tools in any version of Windows.
The tools in CleanSweep are useful for clearing out
clutter on your PC from applications you've downloaded
and installed and for cleaning up after your browser.
There are other ways to do that, but CleanSweep offers
a very clear and simple interface.
Ghost rounds out the tools by letting you take a complete
backup of your hard disk on to CD or another disk;
you can also clone one disk on to another when you
upgrade or move to a new PC. While the wizards are
straightforward, Ghost has to reboot your PC and it
creates large files. This is a powerful utility rather
than a casual backup tool, but like the other disaster-recovery
tools in SystemWorks Pro, it's well worth having around
before you run into problems with your PC.

Review
Norton SystemWorks has saved us from many a problem.
We're not impressed with the uninstall utility and
would advise you use the Windows uninstaller instead,
but don't let that detail put you off, this is a great
utility and will save you hours of troubleshooting.
Symantec enable you to update this software at the
click of a mouse over the Internet. They call this
technology 'Live Update' and it ensures you're kept
right up to date. The defraq tool works like a dream
and is a vast improvement on past incarnations, and
the one-stop fix-all button finds the most likely
trouble spots and resolves matters before your computer
starts groaning. Configuration and automation of tasks
in SystemWorks is comprehensive, and any further Norton
utilities like their Firewall can be easily integrated
into a single system tools environment.
We'd recommend you look at the SystemWorks/Firewall
Package as this represents better value and an
all round solution. If you're not using a computer
to access the Internet, then SystemWorks alone will
ensure your computer runs without complaint.
