This new version now works in Mac OS X, providing protection for users of Apple's latest operating system. The suite consists of four components: Norton Utilities 7.0, one of the best known Mac disk utility packages, offers a full range of disk and file maintenance functions, allowing you to recover badly damaged disks, fix minor disk and file damage, optimise your drive by de-fragmenting files and applications and recover accidentally deleted files. If the worst happens, and you find that you can't even start up from your Mac's hard drive, the Norton SystemWorks 2.0 CD also works as a Start-up disk, giving you a chance to recover files and fix the damaged drive. Also included on the bootable CD is Alsoft Disk Warrior Recovery Edition, another powerful utility which has a great reputation for recovering files from hard drives that are severely damaged. Norton AntiVirus 8.0 provides simple and comprehensive virus protection. Users of Mac OS 8 or OS 9 should note that the Norton SystemWorks 2.0 package includes Norton SystemWorks 1.0 for operating systems older than Mac OS X, so if you already own this version and do not use Mac OS X, Norton SystemWorks 2.0 offers no new features for you. There are other system utilities out there and we've tried one or two of them as the claims are they beat Norton handsdown with problem diognostics. In one such case the software messed around with our Mac OS system so much we were forced to rebuild it from scratch! No such problems ever occured with Norton SystemWorks. It may be that little more expensive, but it's reliable and trustworthy. Norton SystemWorks 2.0 for the Mac is a very different beast to its Windows counterpart SystemWorks. That's inevitable given each utility has to do an entirely different job. There are similarities like the ability to update the software using 'LiveUpdate', however the Mac version of Symantec's system maintenance utility is generally updated far less frequently than its Windows equivalent. That may simply be because the Mac Operating System is more stable, we like to think that, perhaps however the Mac version simply doesn't enjoy the constant development the Windows version undergoes as its user base is so significantly lower. The workings of the Mac OS System is far more hidden than Windows, and it's next to impossible to know what goes on much of the time behind the scenes. That's probably how most Mac owners prefer it. The problem arises when something goes wrong with the Mac, and it's very difficult to know where to start when trying to resolve what may seem even a simple problem. Norton SystemWorks 2.0 for the Mac is there to prevent possible issues arising in the first place as much as possible, and when things do go wrong it's there to resolve your difficulties.
