Creativity and Place
Mike
de Sousa, Director, AbleStable

Place defines our view and expression.
Whether we are land lovers, mountain dwellers,
or feel
most at home on the open sea, place
defines the bond we make
with the
world. Our
surroundings have a profound affect on our mood,
our work,
and our play, and we are at our most creative
when we are
conscious of the influence of place.
We
do not
have to be in the place of our dreams to be
productive. Creative
work, whether personal, social, political
or aesthetic is as much born out of struggle
as contentment. Every place, ordinary or
otherwise,
leaves its mark. There may be times when
the everyday territory we inhabit seems
to bring little or no inspiration and our
only
thought is to escape to higher ground. In
these moments I combat my fear of the familiar
with a challenge to my inertia that I cannot
resist: to find the extraordinary in the
most unexpected
of places. I am forever proved wrong in my
perception there is nothing of further interest
in a place "I know too well".
The
photos below show a place rich with constant
change. From dawn to dusk the sea laps the landscape
lush with light. I have visited here on many
occasions, and yet each scene is as new
to me as a wave spreading its gifts onto the
shoreline for the first time...
